Élégie is a song of mourning — slow-moving, harmonically warm, and quietly melancholic. Drawn from the Op. 18 manuscript (published under the name Charles Henze), it is a well-shaped vehicle for expressive tone and sustained legato phrasing.
Karl Henze (also published as Charles Henze) was a German guitarist and composer active in the mid-nineteenth century. Little biographical detail has survived, but his output reflects the intimate, sentimental character of parlour guitar music from the period.
