Of her Souvenir it was written “Simplicity and neatness are the characteristics” and this is an apt description of these light and lively polkas. (The Musical World, 22(1847):757) While the pieces are musically uncomplicated, they would have offered some technical challenges for amateur players. We decided to arrange it for our duo, and we were happy to discover that the distribution of the four parts was very intuitive - in general, we distributed the voices equally, except in the presence of continuous 32nd notes, in which case one guitar would take three voices to allow as much expressive freedom as possible to the one with the faster scales. The rhetoric of the poet, controlled and calm yet full of nostalgia, allows us to make our own relationship to “childhood” explicit and conscious. It is no coincidence that poets tend to venerate the young. The reason is that children, in their trust, in their excitement, in their astonishment, and in their confidence that something great and beautiful is just around the corner, hold something that many of us have lost. Our yearning to retrieve that wonderful disposition in which everything is either terrifying or awesome is reflected in the poet’s monologue at the end of the piece.
